GALILEO SUNSPOTS
In 1610, Galileo observed sunspots, craters on the moon, the four Jovian moons and the phases of Venus, with a small telescope of his own devising. These revolutionary discoveries forever changed the world and are the inspiration for this series of paintings. At the Vatican Rare Manuscripts Library, I was privileged to draw Galileo’s original sunspot drawings for a period of five days. What an epiphany it was to be so close to his work and glimpse the place where the unknown becomes the known.
